Summary:
"Masquerade is a semi-musical tragicomedy set in Batavia, 1910. It follows the life of a street-rat named Bara who got the opportunity to change his poor fate by pretending to be the illegitimate son of a rich Dutch landlord, Karel Van der Meer.Yet, the plot hardly ran as planned for he got tangled in a romance with Karel’s daughter, Maritje, and the real long-lost son of Karel, Panji, also showed up in Batavia, looking forward to claiming his rights. Shadowed by the fear of the town bandit, Gading, all the complications broke into the climax at Karel’s 50th birthday party, celebrated in the form of a masquerade.

The play simply reminds all of us how we all wear masks in our lives, how we all tend to pretend to be somebody we are not. And as we laugh at the silliness of the characters we watch, may we all be reminded as well to take life less seriously, for Shakespeare once said, ‘All the world’s a stage and all the men and women merely players.’"
