BINUS Networking Day: Behind the Stage Story

Hi all, after being haunted for days, I finally able to turn this experience into written story so I can share them with you. Nah, in this post, I wanna talk about an event called "Networking Day" which was held by BINUS Career. BINUS Career (BiCar) is part of BINUS University which put their effort to make BINUS students got a good job when they are graduated. They have some programs such as Job Fair, Internship Fair, Walk in Interview and many more. One of them is the Networking Day.

In here, Networking Day is held to be a bridge between employer and future employee. The difference from other event is in the participants. The participants are students on the last semester of their study and they were filtered based on their GPA. So the purpose is to introduce Top GPA students to the company and job market and vice versa. They held the event for each faculty with different companies too.

I've experienced this event twice. The first one is from the company side. At that time, around December 2010, my company is looking for some IT position and when BiCar offer this event with highlights on IT faculty, it feels right for us to join. There we met with 7th semester students from many departments. FYI, there are SOO MANY departments in IT faculty. One dept. may contain thousands of students, and for this they limited the participants for only 50 students per event. Can you imagine how sharp the competition is?? According to one of the BiCar staff, they took students with GPA more than 3.7 (out of 4)!! Geezz..

No wonder we were then faced with smart looking students. They seem so IT (Oops :p).  We were presenting three times for three different groups. Some of the students were so critical which made us happy, especially when they already know about our company and what we do. We enjoyed the event and pretty satisfied with the students' responses. For the result, we got one to be our employee in two months time.

Five months later, I got a contact from BiCar which contain invitation to join the same event, but now I'm on the student side. The invitation is for us to come for a pre-event briefing. Later I discover that it's more than one briefing. It takes two briefing until we can attend the Networking Day. The first one is to introduce us to the event and give understanding on the do's and don'ts.

The second one is more interesting. We have Leaderless Group Discussion (LGD) and then assessed from our level of activeness. It aimed to put the active students evenly so every group will have active students in it. Waw, they are really serious for this event.. It doesn't mean that other event is handled unseriously, but I feel that they are trying so much to impress the companies through this event. Back again, they have entitled the participants as the Top graduates, so the participants should look best on the stage.

To our surprise, the companies we'll meet are: Panin Bank, KMI Wire (Cable industry) and Tiens.
The students came on the D day was less than 20. They're divided into three groups and the number going down to 5-6 students per group.

It consists of students from English, Japanese and Chinese Literature Department. For your additional information, we're all on the process of thesis writing, and besides, some students still have classes to attend. The event went smooth and we were approached personally by the company due to the small amount of students in a group.

I think this is an excellent event for all related parties. But there's one thing I regretted from this event. This event has two way functions, for the employer and the students. So, it should be attractive for both sides. The level of attractiveness can then be seen from the number of participants on the D day.

It's clear that the companies offered aren't interesting for the Literature students. For the attending companies, they have fully understood that they'll be faced with Literature students and what they expect is their language ability. But for students, they don't know what they can do with those companies. They're hoping for Literature and Language related job field. Some media, education and printing-publishing companies may be more appealing for them.

I understand that most graduates have different job than what they studied. But please understand that students with high GPA are different. They should be treated differently too. Due to their qualification, they have choices and awareness. Thus, most of them trying to applied their knowledge on what they excel in related field. The story may be different when you face the organizational students. Or maybe they don't fully aware of their potential? I don't know, it's a homework for the students and the institution.

Another thing I wanna say is, GPA is not everything. There still other things student can show you; attitude, experience and skills. So please don't measure them based on the GPA only. You'll miss lots of good candidates then.

In the end of the event, where are the Top GPA students? They're doing their thesis or attending the class. Where's the best students? They're already having a job. And what about the rest attending? Yeah, maybe that's the kind hearted students..

PS: When I'm writing this post, suddenly I remember the student divisions in Hogwarts; the Gryffindor brave hearts, Ravenclaw smarts, kind hearted Hufflepuffs and sly Slytherins. Which House do you belong to?
