#Jakarta484: City of Dream

I write this post as my congratulation for Jakarta's anniversary, the city where I was born and grow. Today Jakarta has passed 484 years and 4 days since its first founded. Why am I writing it using odd number? It's true that it has passed 4 days after the 484 years celebration. Alibi. The truth is just because I'm not able to write this post on the due date. Lots to do recently. (another alibi :p)

However, it's a remarkable age to remember, since I will never reach that number. It has experienced a lot of change during its journey. But one thing will never change. Jakarta was, is and will always be:

City of dream

Underground Secret Dining, Invitation for All !

Asyik is Beyond Duit!! To Have Fun is Beyond Money!!

What is Underground Secret Dining? This is a worldwide movementby passionate people in gastronomy. It's already run in NY, San Fransisco, London, Hong Kong, Sydney, Sao Paulo and rio de Janeiro. Beside Hongkong, Jakarta is the only USD movement in Asia. In Indonesia, it's established by Lisa Virgiano under the name Azanaya.

Azanaya comes from Sanscrete means to have passion for food. They gather people who is passionate with food to try some variety of food which they possibly can't find by themselves. The event is held secretly, with mysterious invitation to certain people, containing the date and area for the event without exact information about the place and food. The place ranged from a ghetto complex, apartment basement, art galleries, local house, public park, or even a floating deck to watch the sunset near the bay area. They choose the venue that brings uniqueness to the whole theme. They'll surely not serve common dishes. What makes it so special is they will NOT tell you the venue and menu in advance.

Why they make it so? Simply because they want to give people an alternative dining experience, but only for people who are really craving for it.

In order to celebrate their second anniversary, USD would like to invite you to their celebration humbly, because they believe that To Have Fun is Beyond Money!! All of you are invited to come on Sunday morning June 26th to Gelora Soemantri Brodjonegoro, Kuningan, South Jakarta.  The event is FREE of charge. You will find food of:

1. Bali Singaraja
2. Tapanuli
3. Ternate
4. Solo
6. Rumah Asap : HomeMade Sausages
7. First Love Cake

The price ranged from IDR 2,500 to IDR 50,000.

Enjoying West Java on the Railway - Bandung Trip [1]

Last week is refreshing timeee.. I went to Bandung with my mom in a group of people. I'll tell the story in three separated post, so just wait.

We departed from Jakarta by train and come home by train too. Why do we choose train as our transportation mode?   In this case, train is not our mode of transportation, but our chosen way to enjoy West Java as a whole.
They have one coach painted with batik picture outside. Cool!
From my experience travelling to other province in Java, each province has their own unique characteristic and thus, resulted in different "best way" to enjoy the area to the fullest. In my opinion, Central and East Java is best be enjoyed by wheeled transportation; by car or bus. You can try North Coast Way (Pantura) and sightseeing the rich culture offered along the way. Yogyakarta is best be reach by wheeled transportation too, because there are lots of interesting city you can stop by in your way.

West Java is totally different. What makes it different is the landscape of the area. It consists of mountains mostly so the land road has to adjust itself to the landscape and so does the railway. Moreover, by using train, we can see the stunning view from above (the railway is higher than the road) and feel the breathtaking old fashioned railway and bridges from the Dutch colonialism era.

BINUS Networking Day: Behind the Stage Story

Hi all, after being haunted for days, I finally able to turn this experience into written story so I can share them with you. Nah, in this post, I wanna talk about an event called "Networking Day" which was held by BINUS Career. BINUS Career (BiCar) is part of BINUS University which put their effort to make BINUS students got a good job when they are graduated. They have some programs such as Job Fair, Internship Fair, Walk in Interview and many more. One of them is the Networking Day.

In here, Networking Day is held to be a bridge between employer and future employee. The difference from other event is in the participants. The participants are students on the last semester of their study and they were filtered based on their GPA. So the purpose is to introduce Top GPA students to the company and job market and vice versa. They held the event for each faculty with different companies too.

I've experienced this event twice. The first one is from the company side. At that time, around December 2010, my company is looking for some IT position and when BiCar offer this event with highlights on IT faculty, it feels right for us to join. There we met with 7th semester students from many departments. FYI, there are SOO MANY departments in IT faculty. One dept. may contain thousands of students, and for this they limited the participants for only 50 students per event. Can you imagine how sharp the competition is?? According to one of the BiCar staff, they took students with GPA more than 3.7 (out of 4)!! Geezz..

Nanny's Pavillion: We Love Tuna!!

Last Saturday, me and my friends wandering around Pacific Place Mall after attending a seminar at @america. We're starving and my friend, a Pacific Place adventurer, suggested us to try Nanny's Pavillion. She recommend baked rice tuna, and that's what I ordered.

Once I ate it, everything felt melted, starting from my tongue down to the belly and ended at my heart. Hmmmm~~ It consists of melting cheese, melting tuna and balanced with grainy rice, all of them formed a perfect combination to satisfy your appetite.  Seems like they baked the rice and tuna in the inner plate and then give the second plate so we can eat safely. The baked tuna really deserved four thumbs up.

The Story of Poke Rice, alias Nasi Toel~

Last night, my mom went home with a box of rice from an event. It's very common and habitual that my mom brought food home and we'll eat together. That time, my mom bring a small box of rice, named "Nasi Toel". I was supremely interested of the menu for its unique name and unusual packaging. When I opened the box, I found square shaped rice, with no sight of complimentary food. Then you have to "poke" the rice and find the side dishes inside. It's just  like Bakpao, you can find the filling as a layer inside the dough. When I taste it, it felt like a blend of dishes.

Nasi Toel
I am curious to the heart with this menu. So I called the owner just now, named Angel. She explained to me about the variety of Nasi Toel menu.

Global Environment Day Seminar: Biopori

"Seminar Hari Lingkungan Hidup Sedunia"

Tomorrow, on June 5th, our Mother Earth will have a Global Environment Day celebration. In relation to the celebration, SWANARAPALA (Nature Lover Club from BINUS) would like to invite you to join a seminar about Biopori on June 8th 2011. There you can have a practice on how to make a biopori, guided by some expert from WALHI (Indonesia Environment Organization).

The example of biopori hole
Just a glance about biopori, it's a method to increase water absorption on soil for overcoming flood. This method was discovered by Ir. Kamir R. Brata, M.Sc, a researcher from Bogor Agriculture Institute. It works by making a hole in the ground (soil, cement, even asphalt) by certain measurement and put some organic trash to form compost. The compost can support living things on soil so they can create pores on the ground. It has been proven effective to increase water absorption, especially in the urban city like Jakarta which has so little space for a massive water absorption site (like forest, field  or lake).

The seminar is on 8 June 2011, from 13.00-17.00, M2C-D Room in Syahdan Campus, BINUS University.
The fee is IDR 10,000 . It's very cheap in term of what it covers: Snack, certificate and donation for tree implantation.

Schedule (estimated):
13.00-13.20: re-registration+snack
13.20-13.40: Opening
13.40-14.25: Environment Seminar
