BBJ Movie Screening: Nia Dinata

Bentara Budaya Jakarta is now come back with their monthly movie screening. This time the movie screened are those directed by Nia Dinata. From 24-25 June, they will screen 4 of her movies, one of them, "Perempuan Punya Cerita"  is a collection of short movies from Nia Dinata and three other directors. The other movies are "Ca Bau Kan", "Arisan!" and "Berbagi Suami".

More about Nia Dinata and her movies:

She was born in Jakarta, 4 March 1970. After having her degree in mass communication from Elizabethtown College, Pennsylvania, she joined a special movie production program in New York University. Shethen back to Indonesia and have some projects, mostly for the television production. Om 1998, she received awards for her television drama titled "Mencari Pelangi" in the Best Movie&Drama category. Since then, she directed a lot of programmes for television, commercials and video clip.

Her first big screen movie is "Ca Bau Kan", produced on 2001. Adapted from Remy Silado's novel, it's the first movie in Indonesia which talks about Chinese in Indonesia after reformation. The movie is a big success and gave her a lot of awards, from national and international institution. Moreover, it nominated as one of the candidate in the Foreign Movie category in Oscar 2003.


 



 She keeps on productive and on 2003, she directed "Arisan!", a satire comedy movie which script was written by Nia and Joko Anwar. This witty movie won a lot of awards, including Best Movie awards at Cinemasia Film Festival in Amsterdam 2004. It's also screened in more than 50 international film festival.

Through her third movie, "Berbagi Suami"(2006) Nia proved herself as an innovative and bold director by exploring sensitive issue such as polygami. It was choosen as one of the movie to be sponsored by French Foreign Minister on 2006 Cannes Film Festival. On the year after that, she received Best Director awards in Brussels International Independent Film Festival.

On 2008, she produced and directed "Perempuan Punya Cerita", an anthology on Indonesian woman with their problems from different backgrounds and age.

Nia founded her own independent movie production house named Kalyana Shira Films. Besides what I have mentioned above, Nia is also actively participate in producing "Janji Joni", "The Matchmaker", "The Big Day", "Long Road to Heaven", Quickie Express", "Gara-gara Bola", "Pertaruhan", Madame X", "Konspirasi Hening" and Working Girls.
